Sunday morning is comprised of two unique environments. The first hour offers a dozen classes on topics as varied as “Intimacy with God: Exploring and Re-applying Contemplative Spirituality,” “Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount: Re-writing the Ten Commandments,” “Bible 101: The Who, What, When, Where, Why of an Life-Changing Inspired Ancient Text,” and “Beyond Charity: The Intentional Life of Generosity and Changed Lives.” Classes typically run for six or seven weeks. Well-educated Pastors and Elders are the primary teachers during the Discipleship Hour.
The second hour is the gathered Worship Hour. The Worship Hour gathers high school students and all adults into the sanctuary for focused worship of our Lord. Worship consists of scripture prayed and read together, hymns, music and singing, spiritual visual arts, stories from our community, short teaching and preaching, the Lord’s Table and Communion.
For the 9:30 Discipleship Hour children and students participate in our Energy Hour, composed of snacks, games, and fun using our full-sized indoor athletic field. For the Worship Hour children and students participate in our Children’s Ministry and Student Ministry, utilizing Lakeland’s large group worship and interaction, and Lakeland’s learning-style specific stations. All Children’s Ministry staff and volunteers are officially background checked and approved. Lakeland Community Church is very serious about protecting our children while they are under our care.
We believe these two unique hours offer the best strategy for accomplishing serious discipleship, focused worship, and authentic community. Ultimately church about shaping authentic community around the transforming life of Jesus Christ.

Why experiment with “a two unique hour” strategy for Sunday Mornings at Lakeland?
If the goal is relationships, then why put forth a plan that sounds more like “information and education classes?”
- Elders want a stronger priority and presence of community. Our mission states, “to build a community of authentic followers of Jesus Christ.”
- Community is more transformative than information and knowledge. There are three modes of discipleship: 1) Relationships 2) Cause and 3) Information. While all three are necessary, we find the greatest discipleship impact is relational.
- I perceive a need for firmer discipleship. In a time of “personal expression” as paramount to “I must be my true authentic self,” discipleship is decidedly not about the individual. Discipleship is about following Jesus – even if it cost you everything.
If the goal is relationships, then why put forth a plan that sounds more like “information and education classes?”
- For many new people church can be an intimidating environment. “What if they ask me a Bible question? What if they ask me something about myself that is too personal?” Classes have a safer perception. Causes have a safer perception. Relationships may be threatening. However, while relationships may be intimidating to some, yet they are most desired by all.
- The classes will contain a significant amount of time given to discussion. This facilitates relationships.
